Sentinel Security Life and Atlantic Coast Life Insurance’s Data Breach Investigation
In December 2025, Sentinel Security Life Insurance Company and Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company—along with their affiliates—confirmed a significant data breach. The companies reported that between April 7 and April 15, 2025, unauthorized actors accessed their computer systems, potentially acquiring files containing sensitive customer information.
The suspicious activity was first detected on April 15, 2025, prompting immediate security measures, including isolating affected systems and launching a forensic investigation. Over the following months, the companies reviewed the impacted data to identify the individuals affected. On December 17, 2025, the companies concluded their review and began notifying impacted individuals.
The breach affected a total of 57,253 individuals, including 24 residents of Maine. The exposed data included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, treatment information, and health insurance policy numbers—data that is highly valuable on the black market and can be used in identity theft, insurance fraud, and other malicious activities.
Although the companies report no evidence of misuse, they acknowledged the risk and issued notifications “out of an abundance of caution.” Affected individuals are being offered one year of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services through IDX. Notifications were sent by mail, and public notices were posted on company websites and shared with media outlets.
The companies also reported the breach to federal law enforcement and relevant regulatory bodies. Internal reviews of data handling policies and employee training are underway to prevent future incidents. Still, those affected should remain on high alert and consider legal options to recover damages and ensure accountability.
