Data Breach Summary
Rockland Trust, a commercial bank serving Massachusetts and Rhode Island, experienced a data breach in May 2024, potentially exposing sensitive personal information of over 2,600 individuals. The breach was caused by a third-party vendor mishandling inactive Bill Pay account data. Affected individuals have been notified and are now being offered credit monitoring services.
Rockland Trust discovered that it had suffered a data breach after investigating a cybersecurity incident on May 15, 2024. The breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information (PII) related to inactive Bill Pay accounts, which was inadvertently shared with an unaffiliated third-party financial institution by one of Rockland Trust’s vendors.

However, the affected individuals’ sensitive information had already been exposed.
