Data Breach Summary
On January 29, 2024, BBS (Bookkeeping and Business Services) discovered a significant data breach involving the exfiltration of sensitive information from its network. The breach was the work of a sophisticated threat actor who demanded a ransom for the deletion of the stolen data. Upon learning of the incident, BBS engaged cybersecurity counsel and a forensic expert to conduct a thorough investigation and manage the situation.
The investigation revealed that the threat actor had gained access to part of BBS’s network, compromising various sensitive records. Working closely with law enforcement, BBS’s counsel and cybersecurity team confirmed the legitimacy of the threat and the reliability of the actor’s promises. After negotiations, BBS paid a ransom and subsequently obtained credible evidence from the threat actor confirming the destruction of all exfiltrated data.
In an effort to ensure the safety of the compromised data, BBS’s counsel and experts have continued to monitor the dark web. To date, they have found no indication of unauthorized disclosure of the stolen information. BBS also undertook an extensive review of the affected records to determine exactly what data was compromised and identify the individuals impacted.
