Data Breach Summary
Starkville Utilities (“Starkville”) is notifying individuals about a recent data security incident that may have resulted in unauthorized access to their personal information. Although there is no evidence at this time of fraudulent misuse, Starkville is providing details about the incident, the steps being taken in response, and resources available to protect against any potential misuse of personal information.
On October 23, 2024, Starkville discovered unauthorized activity within its computer network. Upon learning of the incident, the company immediately disconnected all access to the network and engaged a specialized third-party cybersecurity firm to secure the system and conduct a forensic investigation. The investigation, completed on December 11, 2024, confirmed that an unauthorized user gained limited access to certain information within Starkville’s network.
Starkville then worked with a third-party vendor to conduct a thorough data review, determining which individuals’ information may have been accessed. On April 7, 2025, Starkville finalized the list of individuals to notify.
To assist affected individuals, Starkville is offering complimentary credit monitoring services through a Single Bureau Credit Monitoring service, which includes credit score alerts for 24 months from the date of enrollment. In addition, Starkville is providing proactive fraud assistance through HaystackID, a company specializing in fraud remediation services.
Based on the investigation, the following personal information may have been accessed by the unauthorized user:

Social Security Number

Enroll in Credit Monitoring: Starkville Utilities is offering complimentary credit monitoring through Privacy Solutions. The service includes credit report access, identity theft insurance, and dark web monitoring. Instructions for enrolling are provided to affected members.
Place a Fraud Alert: A fraud alert tells creditors to contact you before opening new accounts in your name. This can be done by contacting one of the three major credit bureaus.
Security Freeze: If you are highly concerned about fraud, Starkville Utilities recommends placing a security freeze on your credit file to prevent unauthorized access.
Review Financial Statements: Regularly monitor your credit reports and financial accounts for any signs of irregular activity.
