Automaker Kia America, Inc. has agreed to a class action settlement resolving allegations that certain 2016–2017 Kia Optima and 2017 Kia Sportage vehicles were equipped with defective automatic window regulators.
Kia America, Inc. has agreed to a nationwide class action settlement to resolve allegations that thousands of its vehicles contain defective automatic window regulators that cause power windows to freeze, drop, or become completely inoperable.
The agreement ends litigation claiming that internal components in certain 2016–2017 Kia Optima and 2017 Kia Sportage power window systems are prone to mechanical failure. Under the court-approved settlement, eligible current and former owners and lessees can submit a claim to receive cash reimbursements for out-of-pocket repair expenses—ranging up to $400 per repair—or opt for a $40 dealer service card. To receive financial benefits, affected drivers must submit a valid claim form on or before November 23, 2026.
At ClassActionU.org, our mission is to empower everyday people and ensure automotive manufacturers are held accountable when vehicle defects compromise safety and cost consumers hard-earned money. Below is a detailed overview of the Kia window regulator lawsuit, who qualifies for compensation, and how you can submit your claim before the deadline.
The class action lawsuit, titled Le Beau et al. v. Kia America, Inc. et al. (Case No. 8:22-cv-01545), was filed in federal court alleging that Kia manufactured and sold vehicles equipped with faulty power window regulators.
According to court filings, the automatic window regulator mechanisms inside the door panels contain plastic drums and gears that are prone to cracking, separating, or breaking under normal use. When these internal components fail, the power window mechanism collapses, preventing the window glass from rolling up or down. In many instances, the window glass becomes permanently stuck in a open position, exposing the vehicle interior to rain, theft, and severe weather.
Plaintiffs asserted that Kia breached express and implied warranties and violated state consumer protection statutes, including the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law. The complaint highlighted that broken window regulators create a distinct safety hazard—particularly during roadside emergencies or severe collisions where an operable window provides a vital escape route for vehicle occupants.
Kia denies all allegations of legal wrongdoing, maintains that its power window assemblies comply with quality standards, and has not admitted liability. Both parties reached the settlement agreement to eliminate the expense and disruption of prolonged trial proceedings.
The settlement covers drivers across the United States and the District of Columbia who currently or previously owned or leased specific Kia models equipped with the alleged defect.
The affected models include:
2016–2017 Kia Optima (certain model years identified by Vehicle Identification Number)
2017 Kia Sportage (certain model years identified by Vehicle Identification Number)
Eligibility is determined strictly by individual Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). Drivers can verify whether their vehicle falls within the settlement class by visiting the official court portal and entering their 17-character VIN.
The settlement agreement establishes a tiered reimbursement structure based on your vehicle’s mileage at the time the power window regulator repair was completed.
Class members who paid out-of-pocket for window regulator parts and labor at an authorized Kia dealership or a reputable third-party repair facility can claim cash refunds under the following schedule:
Under 35,000 miles: 100 percent reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs, up to $400.
35,001 to 55,000 miles: 80 percent reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs, up to $320.
55,001 to 75,000 miles: 60 percent reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs, up to $240.
75,001 to 125,000 miles: 45 percent reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs, up to $180.
125,001 miles or more: 40 percent reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs, up to $160.
For class members who currently own or lease an eligible Kia Optima or Sportage but have not incurred out-of-pocket window repair expenses, the settlement provides an alternative non-cash benefit.
Current owners and lessees can submit a claim form to receive a $40 Kia Dealer Service Card. This service voucher can be applied toward any service, maintenance, routine checkup, merchandise, or replacement parts purchased directly at an authorized Kia dealership service department. The service card remains valid for six months from the date of issuance.
Class members must choose between seeking cash reimbursement for past repairs or receiving the $40 service card—you cannot claim both benefits for the same vehicle.
If you are a member of the settlement class, it is essential to mark your calendar with key dates set by the court:

Submitting a claim requires verifying your vehicle eligibility and providing supporting documentation for past repairs. Follow these simple steps to ensure your claim is processed smoothly:
Verify Your VIN: Visit the official, court-approved website at KiaWindowRegulatorSettlement.com and enter your vehicle’s 17-character VIN to confirm eligibility.
Gather Required Documents: If claiming a cash refund, locate your itemized repair orders or invoices. Supporting paperwork must show your vehicle’s VIN, confirm a window regulator repair, list the repair date and vehicle mileage, state the total cost paid, and provide proof of payment (such as a credit card receipt or bank statement). If claiming a dealer service card, prepare proof of current ownership or lease.
Submit Online or by Mail: Complete the online claim form on the official settlement portal by entering the Class Member ID from your official settlement notice. Alternatively, download a PDF claim form, fill it out, attach your supporting documents, and mail it to the settlement administrator.
Ensure Timely Submission: All claim forms must be submitted online or postmarked by mail no later than November 23, 2026.
Settlement benefits and cash payments will begin to be distributed after the court grants final approval at the January 7, 2027 hearing and any subsequent legal appeals are resolved.
