Online sports merchandise giant Fanatics LLC has agreed to a class action settlement to resolve allegations that it deceptively charged customers hidden handling fees despite aggressively advertising “free shipping” offers. The lawsuit claims that the sports apparel retailer took advantage of sports fans by sneaking these extra charges into the final checkout process, directly contradicting its public promotional banners. If you bought jerseys, hats, or team gear from a Fanatics website and were hit with a surprise handling fee, you may be eligible to claim your share of the settlement benefits.

The lawsuit, Cavanaugh v. Fanatics LLC, was filed in the Circuit Court for Miami-Dade County, Florida. The plaintiffs argued that the retailer’s hidden fee structure violated state consumer protection rules, specifically targeting the deceptive practice of marketing an order as “free” or “flat-rate” to get everyday people to the checkout screen, only to pad the final invoice with non-negotiable handling costs. While Fanatics has denied all legal claims of wrongdoing, the company chose to settle the case for an undisclosed sum to avoid the ongoing expenses and distraction of a lengthy trial.

Unpacking the "Free Shipping" Deception Claims

Fanatics is a massive fixture in the sports world, operating as the primary e-commerce provider for major sports leagues, colleges, and individual teams. When fans log on to buy gear to support their favorite players, they are frequently greeted by promotional banners offering free delivery if their cart reaches a specific monetary threshold.

According to the legal complaint, this marketing setup created a false impression of savings. The plaintiffs alleged that even when customers fully met the requirements for a “free shipping” promotion, Fanatics quietly tacked an independent “handling fee” onto the order breakdown. The lawsuit argues that labeling a charge as a “handling fee” while waving a “free shipping” flag is a distinction without a difference to an ordinary shopper, effectively functioning as a hidden delivery cost that violates fair trade practices.

Settlement Benefits: What Eligible Buyers Can Receive

Under the terms of the court-approved settlement agreement, eligible class members who submit a valid claim form can receive a direct voucher reward to help offset the cost of the disputed charges.

The individual reward consists of two $5 vouchers (totaling $10) that can be applied toward a single future purchase on the Fanatics.com website. Crucially, the settlement conditions dictate that no minimum purchase is required to redeem these vouchers. This means everyday people can use the credit to buy smaller items—like hats, socks, or keychains—completely covered by the settlement funds without being forced to spend additional out-of-pocket money.

Who is Eligible to Submit a Claim?

The Fanatics handling fees settlement group covers a broad, multi-year window, meaning millions of sports fans across the country could potentially be included in the class.

You are considered an eligible class member if:

  • You purchased sports merchandise or apparel through a Fanatics-operated website.

  • Your purchase was completed between May 6, 2018, and March 30, 2026.

  • You were assessed and paid a handling fee on that specific purchase.

The settlement website, HandlingFeeSettlement.com, provides a comprehensive list of all the specific partner and league websites managed by Fanatics that fall under the scope of this litigation.
