If you bought an online mattress that was advertised on sale in California, you may be entitled to cash back. Defendants Night US, LLC and Brooklyn Bedding LLC have agreed to an estimated $8.16 million class action settlement to resolve claims that they deceptively advertised discounts across four major mattress shopping portals.

The lawsuit alleges that the companies used misleading reference prices to create the illusion of massive markdowns on leesa.com, brooklynbedding.com, helixsleep.com, and bearmattress.com. While the defendants strongly deny all allegations of wrong-doing and maintain that their promotional practices complied with the law, they agreed to the settlement to resolve the litigation. Under the deal, eligible California shoppers can claim $110 in cash for every qualifying mattress order or automatically receive a $110 store credit voucher.

What Are Fake Discounts and How Did Mattress Sites Mislead Shoppers?

The class action lawsuit, Grossman et al. v. Night US, LLC and Brooklyn Bedding LLC, was brought in the Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego. The plaintiffs alleged that the mattress retailers routinely advertised crossed-out original prices and limited-time sales that did not reflect true regular retail prices.

According to the complaint, these “phantom discounts” trick consumers into believing they are receiving an exclusive, temporary bargain, which creates a false sense of urgency. The lawsuit claimed these tactics violated California consumer protection statutes, breached express warranties, and resulted in unjust enrichment for the retailers.

How the $8.16 Million Settlement Distribution Breakdown Works

To resolve the claims without going through an expensive trial, the defendants agreed to provide direct compensation to affected customers and cover administrative fees.

The settlement structure gives consumers flexibility in how they receive their compensation:

  • Cash Benefit ($110 per mattress): Class members who submit a valid claim form can receive $110 in cash per qualifying mattress order. Payments will be sent electronically via digital payment methods or mailed as a physical check.

  • Store Credit Voucher ($110 per mattress): Class members who do not opt out and do not file a claim for cash will automatically receive a $110 store credit voucher per qualifying mattress. Vouchers can be applied toward future purchases on the website where the original purchase occurred.

In addition to the estimated $8,163,000 in direct class benefits, the defendants have agreed to cover up to $40,000 in notice and administration costs, service awards of up to $5,000 for each class representative, and up to $1,900,000 in court-approved attorneys’ fees. Crucially, these administrative and legal costs will not reduce the $110 award value provided to class members.

Who Is Eligible to Receive a Settlement Award?

You may be eligible to receive a $110 cash payment or store credit voucher if you purchased one or more mattresses advertised at a discount while physically in California or as a resident of California during the following qualifying periods:

  • leesa.com: July 28, 2019, through March 11, 2024

  • brooklynbedding.com: September 5, 2020, through March 31, 2024

  • helixsleep.com: October 2, 2020, through March 31, 2024

  • bearmattress.com: June 4, 2021, through April 1, 2024

Based on company records, the parties estimate that approximately 74,000 qualifying mattress orders were placed during these periods. If you placed multiple qualifying orders, you do not need to file multiple forms—a single claim submission will cover all of your eligible purchases.

Legal Protections Shielding Consumers From Deceptive Advertised Prices

California maintains some of the country’s strictest consumer protection standards regarding fake reference pricing. Laws such as the California Unfair Competition Law and False Advertising Law prohibit businesses from advertising fake regular prices or claiming products are on sale unless the item was actually sold at that higher reference price for a substantial period.

When companies artificially inflate original prices to make discounts appear larger, everyday shoppers are denied honest market information. Class action lawsuits serve as a crucial tool to hold major retailers accountable, ensuring companies adhere to fair marketing practices and provide restitution to the public when pricing rules are crossed.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Submit Your Claim for Cash

If you want to receive your settlement award in cash rather than store credit, you must take action before the court-ordered deadline.

Follow these simple steps to complete your submission:

  4. Submit Prior to the Cutoff: Ensure your claim is submitted online or postmarked by September 25, 2026.

If you prefer to receive the $110 store credit voucher, you do not need to submit a claim form—the voucher will be issued to your account automatically following final court approval.
