What If I Never Heard of the Company That Sent Me a Data Breach Notice?

Video Transcript

Quite often, you may get a letter from a company that says your information was involved in a breach, and you may have no idea what that company is. That happens quite often, and it doesn’t mean that you just throw out the letter because if you got that letter, it means your information is held by that company and they were breached.

For instance, there are companies that hire computer vendors to do work for them, and those companies are holding your information. For example, you may go to a hospital, and that hospital takes down your information. They have a computer vendor that they then upload all the information for them to host for various reasons. If the hackers came in through the computer vendor side, you may not know who that vendor is, but they have an obligation to notify you that your information was breached.
